Journalism is considered the eyes and ears of any society. It not only holds rulers accountable but also carries the voice of the common person to the corridors of power. However, in today’s era, a pressing question arises: Is journalism still fulfilling its responsibility, or has it merely turned into a business? In the past, when journalism was limited to print media, news was treated as a trust. Journalists would spend days researching and verifying before publishing a story. They endured imprisonment for the sake of truth and refused to compromise on integrity. But the scenario today is entirely different. In the age of TV channels and social media, everything reaches the public in moments. This speed has, on one hand, made the world of information accessible, but on the other, it has fueled sensationalism and unverified news. Now, many institutions and journalists set their priorities based on ratings, advertisements, and pressure from powerful circles. As a result, public trust in the media is steadily eroding. Journalism is called the fourth pillar because it keeps an eye on power and maintains balance in society. But when this pillar weakens, rumors, uncertainty, and chaos take root in society. The greatest challenge for journalism today is to provide the public with factual and unbiased news. There is a need to reestablish journalism on its original foundations. Institutions should move away from the race for sensationalism and ratings, promoting investigative and responsible journalism instead. Journalists must remember that the words from their pens and microphones shape the thinking of the nation. If this responsibility is not fulfilled with honesty, future generations will lose faith in the media.Journalism is not just a profession but a public service. If performed with honesty and impartiality, it becomes a beacon of light for society. But if it turns into merely a business, this beacon will spread smoke instead of light.
